In shortMost travellers living in Bahrain need a B1/B2 visitor visa to visit the United States. You complete the DS-160 form online, pay the visa application fee, book an appointment and attend an interview at the US Embassy in Manama, where a consular officer decides the case. Nationals of Visa Waiver Program countries may be able to use ESTA instead. Your passport nationality, not where you live, decides which applies. Only the US Department of State decides the application.

Gulf United Mobility is not a government body, embassy, consulate or appointed application centre. The requirements we work to are those published by the authorities below, and they may change at any time.

Step 1: ESTA or visitor visa?

Citizens of countries in the Visa Waiver Program can usually travel for short tourism or business trips with an approved ESTA instead of a visa. Everyone else needs a visa, normally the B1/B2 visitor visa. Bahraini citizens are not currently in the Visa Waiver Program, so they need a visa. Expatriates living in Bahrain follow the rule for their own passport.

Check first, prepare secondConfirm your position on travel.state.gov or with our Visa Requirements Checker, which asks for passport nationality separately from where you live. Some ESTA-eligible travellers still need a visa, for example after certain travel or a previous refusal.

What the B1/B2 visa covers

  • B2: tourism, holidays, visiting family or friends, medical treatment
  • B1: business meetings, conferences, negotiating contracts, consulting with associates
  • Combined B1/B2 visas are commonly issued for both purposes

It is not a work visa or a study visa. The visa lets you travel to a US port of entry and ask for admission. The officer there decides whether to admit you and for how long, and the visa's validity is not the same as the permitted length of stay.

The process from Bahrain

  • Complete the DS-160 online application and keep the confirmation page
  • Pay the non-refundable visa application (MRV) fee through the official appointment system
  • Book an interview appointment at the US Embassy in Manama
  • Attend the interview with your passport, DS-160 confirmation and supporting documents
  • If approved, the visa is placed in your passport and returned through the stated collection method

Wait times for interview appointments change and are published by the Department of State. Some applicants renewing a recent visa may qualify for interview waiver; the embassy website sets out the current criteria.

The interview at the embassy

The interview is usually short. The officer looks at whether your purpose is genuine, whether you can fund the trip and whether you have strong reasons to return. Under US law, applicants must overcome a presumption that they intend to immigrate, so ties to Bahrain matter: residence, employment, business, family and previous travel.

Answer briefly and truthfully, and make sure your answers match your DS-160. Officers may not ask to see documents, but bring them organised in case they do.

Frequently asked questions

Do Bahraini citizens need a visa for the USA?

Yes. Bahrain is not currently part of the Visa Waiver Program, so Bahraini citizens apply for a visa such as the B1/B2. Check travel.state.gov for the current position.

Can I apply for a US visa in Bahrain if I am not Bahraini?

Residents of Bahrain can generally apply at the US Embassy in Manama. Bring evidence of your residence status. Your nationality still decides whether you need a visa at all.

How long does it take?

Interview wait times and processing vary and are published by the Department of State. Some cases also go through additional administrative processing after the interview. No agent can shorten these times.

Can Gulf United Mobility guarantee approval?

No. Decisions rest solely with US consular officers and, on arrival, with US border officials. We prepare, review and coordinate the application so it is complete and consistent.
