In shortIt depends on the authority. Several authorities explicitly advise against buying non-refundable tickets before a decision, while others expect a travel itinerary or proposed dates as part of the application. In many visitor cases what is needed is a credible travel plan — dates, route and purpose consistent with the rest of the file — rather than a paid ticket. Whatever the route, a fabricated ticket, booking confirmation or PNR must never be submitted as genuine evidence.

Four different things people call "a flight booking"

Much of the confusion around this question comes from one phrase covering four different documents. Being precise about which one an authority asks for prevents both overspending and under-evidencing.

  • Confirmed ticket: a paid, issued ticket with a ticket number. It commits money before you have a decision.
  • Reservation or held booking: a genuine reservation made through an airline or agent, sometimes held for a limited period, which may or may not be paid.
  • Travel itinerary: a written plan of the intended journey — routes, dates, times — which is not in itself a purchase.
  • Proposed travel dates: the dates entered on the application form, with no external document behind them.
Match the document to the instructionIf the authority asks for an itinerary, an itinerary is the correct answer — a paid ticket is not "safer", it just risks money. If the authority asks for confirmed travel, an itinerary will not satisfy it.

Requirements vary by authority and category

There is no single global rule, and the position differs not only between destinations but between visa categories within a destination. Confirm what your route requires on the official source before spending money.

  • United Kingdom: GOV.UK sets out what a Standard Visitor application must demonstrate about the intended visit, and its published guidance on evidence should be read for your case rather than assumed.
  • Schengen: the member state receiving your application, or its appointed centre, publishes the document list, which commonly includes evidence of the intended journey.
  • United States, Canada and Australia: each authority publishes its own document expectations, and interview-based routes may treat travel plans differently from document-based ones.

Where guidance advises against non-refundable purchases before a decision, take that at face value. A refusal does not refund an airline ticket.

Consistency matters more than the document type

Whichever form your travel evidence takes, it should agree with everything else in the file. Inconsistencies here are easy for a caseworker to spot and hard for an applicant to explain afterwards.

  • Travel dates on the form match the itinerary, accommodation and any leave approval from your employer.
  • The length of stay matches the funding shown and the purpose stated.
  • Entry and exit points make sense for the destination — particularly for Schengen, where the member state you enter and the main destination matter.
  • Multi-city plans are internally coherent, with accommodation covering each leg.
  • Any business trip aligns with the invitation, meeting dates or event dates.

Never submit a fabricated ticket, booking or PNR

This is the one absolute ruleNever submit a fake ticket, a fake booking confirmation, an expired PNR presented as live, or any document that was not issued by a genuine airline or agent. It is deception. It can lead to refusal, a long-term bar on future applications and consequences that follow you across destinations.

So-called "dummy tickets" are widely marketed and best avoided entirely. Airlines and authorities can verify a PNR, and a reservation that no longer exists at the point of assessment reads as a fabricated document even where it once existed. If your route needs evidence of travel, use a genuine reservation or a properly presented itinerary, and be able to stand behind it.

A practical sequence for visitor applications

The following order avoids both overspending and thin evidence. Adjust it to whatever your authority's published document list actually says.

  • Confirm on the official source what your route expects: itinerary, reservation or confirmed travel.
  • Fix your intended dates against real constraints — leave approval, event dates, school holidays, residence permit validity.
  • Prepare a clear written itinerary covering the whole journey, including internal travel for multi-city trips.
  • Where a reservation is expected, make a genuine one, ideally refundable or changeable.
  • Keep flexibility for processing time, which is published by the authority and cannot be shortened by any adviser.
  • Book paid tickets once the decision allows it, unless the route genuinely requires confirmed travel earlier.

Flight and itinerary checklist
  • The authority's published requirement for your route confirmed
  • Intended dates fixed against leave, events and residence permit validity
  • A clear written itinerary covering the whole journey
  • Genuine reservation made where the route expects one
  • Dates consistent across form, accommodation and employer documents
  • Refundable or changeable options preferred before a decision

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy a flight ticket before applying for a visa?

Often not. Several authorities advise against buying non-refundable tickets before a decision, and many visitor routes ask for an intended itinerary rather than a paid ticket. Because the position varies by destination and category, confirm what your route requires on the authority's own published guidance before you spend money.

What is the difference between a flight reservation and a ticket?

A ticket is paid and issued, with a ticket number. A reservation is a genuine held booking that may not be paid and may expire. An itinerary is a written travel plan and not a purchase at all. Authorities differ in which of these they expect, so match the document to the published instruction.

Are dummy tickets acceptable for visa applications?

No. Submitting a fabricated ticket, booking confirmation or PNR as genuine evidence is deception and can lead to refusal and a long-term bar on future applications. Where travel evidence is required, use a genuine reservation or a properly presented itinerary.

What happens to my ticket if the visa is refused?

That depends entirely on the airline's or agent's terms, not on the authority. This is the main practical reason to prefer refundable or changeable arrangements, or to delay purchase until a decision is issued where the route allows it.

Can Gulf United Mobility book my flights?

Where it forms part of the agreed service scope, yes — Gulf United Mobility can arrange flights and travel preparation through reputable third-party providers if you do not already have confirmed arrangements, and keep those plans consistent with your application. Gulf United Mobility is not an airline and never produces fabricated travel documents.
