In shortFor a UK Standard Visitor visa, prepare a valid passport or travel document, evidence of funds and the purpose of your visit, and documents explaining your circumstances at home. Add residence, employment or business, sponsor and family evidence where relevant. This checklist separates the core evidence from documents that depend on your situation; it is not a universal mandatory list. Confirm that the Standard Visitor route applies to your nationality and travel purpose before preparing the file.

UK visitor visa documents: quick checklist

Official guidance: GOV.UK visitor visa supporting documents

Start with these categories, then use the detailed sections below to select evidence relevant to your application. Supporting documents should explain the same trip, funding and personal circumstances as the online form.

  • Passport or travel document: valid for the whole UK stay, with a blank page for the visa.
  • Trip details: intended dates, reason for visiting, where you plan to stay and estimated costs.
  • Funds: financial evidence, such as bank statements, showing access to enough money for the visit and the source of those funds.
  • Residence: evidence of legal residence if you are applying from a country where you are not a national.
  • Employment, business or study: relevant evidence of your occupation, income or ongoing commitments.
  • Sponsor, if someone else is paying: what they will cover, their ability to pay and your relationship to them.
  • Personal circumstances, where applicable: host details, child travel consent, relationship evidence or previous refusal information.
  • Translations: a full, independently verifiable translation of documents that are not in English or Welsh.
Not every item applies to everyoneA passport is required; the supporting evidence depends on your circumstances. Do not buy flights or pay for accommodation solely to create a visa document bundle. Reservations are not a guarantee of approval.

Why there is no single mandatory checklist

Applicants often look for the list. UK Visas & Immigration does not work that way for the Standard Visitor route: the guidance describes what must be shown — a genuine short visit, adequate funding, and credible circumstances that support leaving the UK at the end of the visit — and leaves the choice of evidence to the applicant.

That is why a salaried employee, a business owner, a student, a retired parent and a sponsored spouse should not submit the same file. Treating any published list as mandatory tends to produce two problems at once: irrelevant documents that add bulk, and missing documents that actually mattered for that particular case.

The rule to keep in mindThe final supporting evidence depends on the applicant's circumstances and on the official requirements published by GOV.UK at the time of application.

Identity

  • Current passport or travel document valid for the whole UK stay, with a blank page for the visa
  • Previous passports where they evidence relevant travel history
  • Copies of previous UK, US, Schengen, Canadian or Australian visas
  • National ID document where relevant to your nationality
  • Full translation of documents not in English or Welsh, including confirmation of accuracy, the translation date, and the translator's full name, signature and contact details

Residence

If you live in a GCC country where you are not a national, evidence of legal residence helps explain where you are applying from. Residence documents alone do not establish eligibility for a UK visitor visa.

  • Bahrain: CPR and valid residence permit
  • Saudi Arabia: Iqama, or national ID for Saudi nationals
  • UAE: Emirates ID and valid residence visa
  • Evidence of length of residence where it strengthens the picture
  • An explanation of your residence circumstances where the permit alone does not make them clear

Where a residence permit expires close to the intended return date, it is better to address that in the application than to leave it unexplained.

Employment or business

Salaried employees

  • Employer letter confirming position, salary, length of service and approved leave dates
  • Employment contract or salary certificate
  • Recent payslips where they help reconcile bank credits

Business owners and self-employed applicants

  • Commercial registration or trade licence and ownership evidence
  • Short description of what the business does and your role in it
  • Evidence of ongoing trading activity
  • Evidence of personal income drawn from the business, not only company documents

Students, retired and non-working applicants

  • Enrolment letter and term dates for students
  • Pension or retirement income evidence
  • Sponsor evidence where the applicant is not funding the trip themselves

Financial circumstances

GOV.UK does not set a minimum balance. The requirement is that the trip can be funded without working in the UK, so the money should be credible in relation to the itinerary and clearly sourced.

  • Personal bank statements covering a recent, consistent period
  • Salary credits that reconcile with the employment evidence
  • A short written explanation for any large or unusual deposit
  • Savings or fixed-deposit evidence where relied on
  • Card statements or additional accounts where funds are held elsewhere

If a large or unusual deposit is relevant to the funds you rely on, explain its source and provide supporting evidence where available. A temporary transfer alone does not explain your normal financial circumstances.

Purpose of travel

  • Intended dates and an outline of the trip
  • Tourism: itinerary and the main places you plan to visit
  • Family visit: relationship to the person, and their details in the UK
  • Business: meeting, conference or event confirmation and the host organisation
  • Short course: course confirmation, dates and provider
  • Family event: wedding, graduation or similar confirmation
  • Medical treatment: clinic correspondence, treatment plan and funding evidence

The purpose stated on the form, the itinerary and the supporting documents should all describe the same visit.

Accommodation plans or a host invitation

  • Details of where you intend to stay; a paid hotel booking is not a standard supporting-document requirement
  • Where staying with a host: an invitation letter with their full address
  • Evidence of the host's status in the UK
  • Evidence of the relationship between you and the host where relevant

Keep your intended accommodation and travel dates consistent with the form. GOV.UK lists hotel bookings and flight bookings among documents that are less useful as visitor-visa evidence; do not treat paid bookings as mandatory. Follow any specific instructions for your circumstances.

Sponsorship, where relevant

If someone else is paying for the trip — a parent, spouse, employer or UK-based relative — the file needs to show who they are, that they can afford it, and why they are doing it.

  • Short letter of support confirming what is being funded
  • Sponsor's bank statements or income evidence
  • Sponsor's identity and status document
  • Evidence of the relationship, where the sponsor is a family member
  • Employer letter where a company is funding business travel

Additional case-specific evidence

  • Previous refusal notices, together with an application that addresses the reasoning directly
  • Court, immigration or overstay history where it exists, disclosed honestly
  • Consent and travel details for a child travelling without both parents
  • Marriage or birth certificates where the relationship is part of the case
  • Explanatory covering letter where the circumstances genuinely need one

A covering letter is useful where something needs explaining. It is not a substitute for evidence, and it should not simply restate the form.

Consistency review before submission
  • Names and dates of birth match across every document and the online form
  • Travel dates are identical on the form, itinerary, accommodation and leave approval
  • Declared income matches the bank credits shown
  • Every unusual credit has a brief explanation
  • Residence permit validity supports the intended travel
  • Sponsor evidence is present wherever you are not self-funding
  • Any previous refusal is acknowledged and addressed
  • Translations are provided where required
The final supporting evidence depends on the applicant's circumstances and on the official requirements published by GOV.UK when the application is made.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official UK visitor visa document list?

GOV.UK publishes what the application must demonstrate rather than one mandatory list for every applicant. Evidence is chosen to fit the individual's circumstances, which is why this guide is organised by category.

How many months of bank statements should I provide?

There is no single published figure for the Standard Visitor route. A recent, continuous period that shows your normal income and the availability of funds for the trip is generally what makes the position clear.

Do I need to show a minimum bank balance?

No minimum balance is published. What matters is that the funds are sufficient for the trip described, clearly sourced and consistent with your declared circumstances.

Should I submit as many documents as possible?

No. Irrelevant volume makes a file harder to assess. Relevant, consistent evidence in each category is considerably more useful than a large bundle.

Do my documents need to be translated?

For documents not in English or Welsh, provide a full translation that can be independently verified. It must include confirmation that it is accurate, the date, the translator's full name and signature, and their contact details.

Do I need flight tickets or paid hotel bookings for a UK visitor visa?

Paid flight tickets and hotel bookings are not standard supporting-document requirements. Provide your intended travel dates and accommodation details, and follow any case-specific instructions. GOV.UK lists flight and hotel bookings among less useful visitor-visa evidence; purchasing them does not guarantee a visa.

Which documents should I provide if someone sponsors my visit?

Explain who is supporting you, your relationship, what they will pay for and how they can afford it. Relevant evidence may include a support letter, their financial evidence and, if applicable, evidence that they are legally in the UK. Your own circumstances still need to be explained.

Does this checklist apply outside the GCC?

The categories are general to the UK Standard Visitor route, but the residence evidence sections are written for applicants in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Requirements should always be confirmed for your own country of residence.
